I wouldn't be surprised if some Givers are used like the gifted in Fire Punch at farms/power plants. Then you have powers like graffiti that detect hostile intent and deny entry with an invisible force field. So really, they can just conjure up anything.
As for why things (and linguistic concepts) in fictional worlds look similar to things from our world, it's probably so that writers don't have to imagine things no one has ever imagined before and then have to explain what those are to the audience. Because if you think about it, shoes, TVs, umbrellas and spray cans in their world also have no business looking like ours.
