Sepsis fundamentally alters how your immune system works.
Depending on what happened, you can either go on to develop severe autoimmune issues, or even weakened immune systems.
It seems to be more the former, severe allergic responses to the host body.
Sepsis itself causes damage due to that, a cytokine storm is the reason it fucks you up so badly and changes how your immune system responds. Doesn't just happen with sepsis.
As for length of stay, depends.
Anything ICU-adjacent is bad.
No ICU but under a month, small-moderate risks for long term issues.
Regardless of that, long term mortality rates are always lower post cytokine storms.
I'm at risk of one due to my immune system being overactive, but so far have managed to avoid it.
