It does seem awfully strange not to have any idea at all though. I'm just a low level employee at my office and even I know roughly how the company is doing even if I don't have direct access to the company accounting. I feel like most employees at most companies have at least a rough idea of how the company that employs them is performing.

When they say that, they specifically mean payments that went through VShojo i.e. sponsors, merch etc.
VShojo never touched their streaming revenue, so they were still making money. And when you're making their kind of money, you probably aren't scrutinizing your bank account as much.
They see money come in, they trust the people they work with and have no reason to run the numbers themselves, next thing you know the company's fleecing you for the better part of a year.
