It has nothing to do with male or female, it depends on what their goals are and how talented they are.
Megumi Ogata is still extremely active and has voiced several protagonists or duetertagonists in recently anime (Hanako, whatshisface from JJK). She's done at least 1 role basically every year since Eva, many of them extremley prolific.

Kawasumi Awako still does several characters a year every year. She debuted in the late 90s
What ended up happening, I imagine, is that as she got older, she was less in demand to voice main heroines or young girls. If anything, her being so iconic as Saber means that she's getting cast by people who specifically want her to do the Saber voice, which is pretty different from most of her early roles
