You should turn off notifications and just check in on the channel when you feel like watching something of theirs.
A lot of channels have shorts on main without issue, so why would lives be the dealbreaker, especially when like shorts they are segregated to their own tab on the page.

NTA but no. I was subscribed to a bunch of animators, happy to see new animations on my subscription page every now and then.
Then they decided to make regular 4+ hours livestreams clogging up my sub page so I dropped them.
They weren't even good at streaming, essentially fully silent unless they got a message.
