Damn. Even the YGO sponsored streams had them finish some games, and that shit has triple the amount of text in every card.
It's weird how much Biboo and ERB got into it tho. They probably played the game extensively beforehand.

Digital is better for guiding someone who doesn't understand everything. Mori's played a few games of commander with her irl friends and Kiara wanted to relive a piece of her childhood when her mom used to play it with her and her siblings. Problem is, new magic is basically a clown show when compared to old magic, and every card has tons of text on it that makes you constantly read. There were two points in the collab where Kiara realized the old mtg isn't like new mtg, which is designed around this stupid format instead of being geared towards 1v1. She knew exactly what death touch did because it's an old mechanic with a simple name that is memorable which proves she still had some idea of how to play.

MTG and YGO are both trash for different reasons, and I'm talking about just the mechanics, since I wouldn't play MTG even if it played well.
Don't know too much about the Pokemon card game, but I'm not too much in to Pokemon and I feel like I would only be playing with women and small children.
Actual good TCGs like Duel Masters are JP only, so the best we can settle for now is shit like Shadowverse.

It is. You usually have one or two points of interaction. Any decks like that in tournament play for mtg usually get banned. Things like Eggs (second sunrise), Nadu, and Krack-Clan Ironworks get the axe pretty quickly because it is extremely unfun to watch someone take 100 actions in 20 minutes and then win. Decks like ad nauseum tendrils in legacy survive because while it is a bunch of actions, it usually take about 3-5 minutes max to actually cast everything you draw off the ad naus and show the win with the tendrils if they don't have a specific kind of counter. Add in that there are still things you can do while someone is comboing off like that (they tried with hand traps and reactive abilities in YGO), and most games with combo decks like that tend to be a lot more tolerable than in YGO where someone sets up on turn one or two and then spends 20 minutes taking actions and searching their deck.
Pokemon has a bit of the same issue, there's A LOT of deck searching and there's zero interaction when it isn't your turn.

There's only a handful of decks in 3 formats that do this. Add in that you can concede any time that it actually is unwinnable, and those 3 to 5 minute wins take a minute after they do something like resolve an ad naus and reveal 19 cards with their wincon. Some people have a very hard time truly realizing when they've lost the game and should concede so they don't go to time.

It sounds so unreal doing something fun like playing MtG with your parents.

My family used to play video games together when I was pretty young, nes and sega era. I tried playing the original legend of zelda a few hears ago again after probably 15 years of not touching it and can still remember every single secret area in the overworld. My parents loved pinball and I liked sonic so we used the play that infamously hard game a lot to the point that I played it last year and was able to beat the entire thing on my first try and remembered where every choas emerald was on the maps and how to get to them.

They are both quite inexperienced with the game and they were still figuring things out. Kiara didn't even know sam could partner with frodo and had to fish him out of her deck pre-game. I watched the whole vod and they were fumbling around, struggling to understand the game because they're basically new players with a very basic understanding of the game fundamentals. Though kiara had such a fun time she wants to do it more and wants to branch out into other formats too. If we're lucky we might get some arena streams some day, and even the potential for 4 player commander games in about a year or so. All in all i'm happy for more magic content from the girls, definitely an unexpected crossover but a welcome one for sure. Despite my feelings on the current state of the game i do want to see the girls play more mtg.

I think it's more that she thinks other formats will be quicker to have a few games. She even said in the collab that it was taking a lot long for a single match than she was used to and wanted to do 60 card because she thought it would be more streamlined. I think the best option would be to have someone take whoever wants to play to Hareruya and pick a bunch of cards they think look cool out of the 10/20 yen boxes of bulk and cobble together a casual deck with a little bit of synergy. Cutting down on text on cards helps with people who are now, but all of the new sets have commons with bricks of text on them, which is hard to parse if you don't have any idea what you're doing.

That's a good point. Complexity creep has been a problem, especially with universes beyond and every new set trying to push some crazy new gimmick thag never sees play outside of the current standard rotation. I think we could do with more introductory sets like the portal block as that is the real way to help new players settle in. I've heard good things about the avatar beginner box since it has minimal text on cards.

The issue is that most of the new players are coming in through commander, so that's all they know and play. Their friends play it and ask if they want to try, and when they get into it they get pointed to stupid sites like EDHRec which streamlines people into playing better cards instead of playing fun cards. EDH used to be about playing with cards you had laying around after they rotate from the format of your choice and was a fun and casual thing. Now people just go out and buy cards from a decklist online because 'SYNERGY!!!' and magic loses that really special moment new players used to have where one of their bad ideas and deck building finally clixk and they get pumped about it.

They really didn't do much in terms of concrete game actions honestly, I guess that's what happens when neither player has any sort of game plan. These things really need to feature one more experienced player to guide the newbies along. Also IIRC at one point Kiara was using food tokens as a lifegain mana rock without sacrificing them.

It was an unavoidable consequence of older player inviting their friends to play commander. You can't make some jank pile out of shit you find in your trade binders if you're a new player because you won't have several year's worth of chaff stached away, so you'll have to buy new cards.

And that's where the crux of all of this comes from. I can't speak for everyone who got into the game before Commander/EDH became the official darling of the casual play world, but I know I started by buying 2 boxes with a friend and some shitty cheap starter decks from non-standard sets at the time (Shards era, bough kamigawa precons) and just looking at all the cards and building goofy decks. Kitchen table players would always come to the LGS's I'd go to when a new set came out and do stuff like crack packs/boxes there, would have trade binders to look through, and would leave. Along with prereleases giving you some start chaff to use, those are the ways I can think of that people would take their first steps in magic before EDH. You could choose to look up cohesive cards and decks online if you wanted, but once you take that step, it's over for true casual play in your playgroup, and unfortunately almost everyone points new players to EDHRec.

You can't put the genie back in the bottle. You can't go back to a time when everyone didn't know it's 100x more efficient to just look up what cards you want and buy them online instead of spending hundreds of dollars on packs hoping that just maybe you get the cards you want. I cannot in good faith tell a new player that buying a precon isn't a much better option than buying a booster box.

If you're a longtime drafter and have a ton of random cards lying around then yeah it's fun seeing what you can cook up with what you have (although let's be honest, most regular drafters sell the valuable stuff in order to pay for the next draft), but I'm not gonna tell anyone that spending a ton of money gambling on packs is a good idea.

I don't have a big issue with precons, because they work very similarily to those starter decks that wotc has released for a long, long time. It's just the idea of goijg to a website that catalogues the best combinations of cards and shoves it into the newbie's face with links to buy everything. Searching through catalogues or bulk boxes for cool stuff is far more on the level that I feel real casual play would be good for, which is why I said at the start that I think it'd be better for both them and content to go with someone to Hare or another store and just look for cool cards in the trash boxes and maybe buy a card or two from the case if they like the art.

Commander is an extremely slow format by design (they literally ban cards that end the game too quicky). And there are creatures that play it competitively, for practically chum change, for 10 hours straight, only for it to end in a draw.
