If you play Bioshock first story climaxes can be very impressive but if you then play SS2 or played SS2 you realize you’ve been duped because BS1 mostly reuses it all from SS2 right down to the way the shodan reveal is handled. The objectivism focus is there in both because cyberpunk settings like SS2 are all about that sort of selfishness of larger powers and exploring the short sighted impacts of it but SS2 also has some of what you’d see in BS2 as well with the many. SS2 just handles it all better story wise compared to both bs1 and 2 and tends to be a bit more subtle and spreads things more smoothly over the entire game while BS1 takes an absolute nosedive after the halfway point. Meanwhile BS2 isn’t special in its story but tried to be a little different and stays pretty good throughout.
Then there are the mechanics. BS1 casualizes things compared to SS2 and perhaps goes too far but SS2 did have horrible balance issues between skills. However BS2 made big, big improvements on the BS1 changes by again rewarding specialization due to limited weapon upgrades that reward specialization, plasmids that are more varied and useful and have actual improvements as you upgrade them (while in bs1 the best parts of plasmids are the secondary effects that barely change when upgraded but the cost skyrockets letting you get those bonuses less). In BS2 the gene tonics have a shared pool instead of 3 areas so you don’t need to eventually get hood at everything and can really set up specific loadouts. BS2 can end up easier because of these things but Bioshock 1 isn’t hard and an arpg game where you can feel stronger because of your choices of build is a positive in my mind.
So yeah, basically I can’t give BS1 much credit on the writing and when I compare gameplay BS2 wins there so I end up thinking it is the better of the two.
