What soured people was also the fact Blonde Blazer approaches Robert with the intention of hiring him. Would be better if she just rescued him, they bonded, and she returned the next day/scene with the hiring offer because she realizes AFTER the interaction that he has a heroic spirit that the organization could use to help team Z, and he deserves help with his mecha.
You can still have boyfriend reveal as the splitting point to Invisigal, but at least Blazer wouldn't appear like she wasn't genuine with her intentions.
