Japanese defamation law is actually how it works in most cases, where defamation is defamation regardless of if the statements being made are true, because defamation is an act defined as acting in a way specifically to (maliciously) damage another's reputation, so sharing (true) private information about someone that is in no way in the public interest.
The sooner you realise the US legal system is actually one of the worst in the first world the better.
