If you want to be a singer, holo is probably better. There are downsides, like Nerissa's your idol coming out months after AmaLee's, or how her Gnarly came out few days after Phase's but that had a MV. It's clear that hololive slows things a lot compared to what you can do on your own.
At the same time, holo gives you connection and a box to stand on. Without it, you'd have to be very good at selling yourself. Amalee managed it, I think she's basically the only one who did it in the west, but she has a lot of connections from her va works. Every other vtuber who wants to be a singer has failed to make a significant impact.
