It's honestly got an absolutely amazing story. One of the best ones I've seen in gaming. However, it starts slow as shit. Nearly all of the vanilla game (pre-expansions) is pretty boring, barring a few highlights here and there. After that though it pretty much entirely turns the quality on its head and is a captivating narrative through pretty much everything thats left, with a couple speed bumps in Stormblood.
Gameplay wise, it also starts very slowly and gets much better as it goes. Combat in the early levels feels sluggish and grindy, but as you get higher level and the Jobs introduce more skills and mechanics and the bosses get more involved, it gets very fun.
TL;DR version of the long answer: It's really good but know you're getting into something that is a long haul and be prepared to stick with it for the payoff.
