I feel the most productive times I've had watching them is when I'm interested enough to know exactly what they're saying. It forces me to try and transcribe the words myself to be able to type into an online dictionary or DeepL.
Sometimes it's pretty hard to catch a word if the Vtuber is talking quickly, but the chat can help sometimes with that.
Also back when I first began watching them, I used to be very curious about various rrats (like who their roommates were) but I didn't know about the /jp/ thread, so I would have to visit 5ch to try and find all the details.
I don't really care much about that kinda shit anymore, but all the reading practice I got from having to navigate the site and decipher the posts was invaluable in increasing my reading ability.
My deep desire of wanting to find out what happened was great motivation. It was fun too, kinda like a treasure hunt.
