But then the unironic faggots swooped in and turned the fandom into a cesspool where the super (not just mildly) autistic garbage outnumbered the horsefuckers from here.
The entire thing grew out of control and took on a life of its own as the "brony fandom" morphed into something genuinely embarrassing to be associated with. Eventually the board itself devolved into nothing but autistic fetiah green text circlejerks until the fandom went to war with itself over offensive imagery in fanart.
I'd stopped really caring about the memes and lolz years before that shitshow happened, and now here I am watching the same group of usual suspects do it all over again with another highly memetic form of entertainment that people latched into, started advertising, and effectively drew in the absolute worse crowd they ever could for nothing more than the sake of senseless numberfagging.
This is the true horror of trying to grow the niche fanvase for your hobby and make it more popular. This is why you don't break containment or try to go mainstream. This is why you let people find it in their own. Otherwise you wind up letting in the horde who'll destroy everything you once considered sacred, driving you out to find a new fandom.
I'm afraid at this point it's already too late. It's only a matter of time before the western vtubing fandom becomes too toxic to associate with, so I hope you're all prepared to go hang with jp bros or find something else to take an interest in.
