I would understand if they did something game breaking but they were trying to do classic horror movie tropes that you kept nixing. The characters were supposed to find the moth in cabin 2 right? It sounded like they were going to explore that other cabin, but you forced them to go to the van. Then when they were trying to create tension with the van (no one being able to drive, fear that there would be not enough gas to make it to safety) you took that agency away from them too. There were also parts where you described the scene as the DM should, but then forced the players to do a very specific action. Like at the end when they were underground and there you described a draft of air coming from above, that was good. But then you ruined it by immediately

Basically the problem that happened was that you kept taking away their agency, which was especially bad since you kept emphasizing that they were supposed to set up the scene due to the nature of the game. Next time make some key plot point ideas and don't be afraid to let the players talk and do things for a bit.
They say the van might not have enough gas to make it through a 5 hour drive? Perfect, you can let them explore the woods and get attacked by the mothman while out on foot. Or the fact that they were all prepared to go
'oh no! none of us know how to drive' was also a perfect set up to let them stay in the area they needed to be in to discover the moth man clues or get attacked. Keeping vague plot points that you adjust around the players is the key to being a good DM.
