Memes were called memes pretty early on (at least on 4chan and other chans like 7chan), a lot of people didn't know the origin of the word and thus didn't know how to pronounce it, people would legitimately argue over whether or not it was "me-me" or "mem". The word was used here pretty much the same way it's used now, but there was a period where the word first took off on sites like reddit where they basically used it to mean "funny picture with words on it" and that's all they used it for.
