Dealing with pet death takes a toll on you if you've never experienced it before.
So many people, especially women, are insulated to this type of thing, which is why they get cognitive dissonance as a teen and a lot of them become reactionary vegans/vegetarians.
Guys like us have just experienced the reality of life more, we expect loss, so we aren't crippled by it.
