I remember one of the vsingers from Azki's stream November last year was so excited to go from 300 to 500 subs after two years of activity... only to see Youtube drop her down to 270 a few hours later.

Everyone is stuck with it, nothingthat can be done. There can no competition because is just too expensive to host videos, unless you make a website for an specific interest , like a video hosting site only for vtubers, vut then you dont get the YT audience and end up broke anyway.
