She is their current star only because Elira (the former) isn't performing that great anymore or even Pomu, they have had to switch gears to pushing Selen because she is all they they have that looks impressive and even if her numbers are impressing globally between Hololive they're pathetic, she barely outperforms girls like Sana, Anya or Iofi even during long breaks or languageg/ branch debuffs.

Mel's break came long after her debut actually, she started out in May 2018 and the whole manager saga didn't kick off until around September 2019. The actual break started in February 2020 and lasted for 4 months.

Now, nearly as bad as a break was that Mel streamed extremely infrequently after her debut. And I do mean extremely, we're talking Ayame frequency for the first 5 months after Mel's debut. She started taking Hololive more seriously as a side-gig in the leadup to her first birthday in 2018 and maintained that level of moderate activity up until the situation with her manager kicked up a year later.
