As for your original question, I think he has a point about how people in an anonymous environment tend to volunteer traumatic and weird shit about themselves much more willingly so you can easily get the feeling that no one around you is normal in VRChat. I have seen it happen with chat platforms 10 years ago, but I can't speak for VRchat specifically.
