It was used derisively for like 18 months in the 2010s when the Pick-up artist scene splintered into the self-improvement movement on one end and various Incel (chiefly /r/incel) culture forums to denote someone more lucky (and thus naturally non-empathetic to everyone less lucky) than they deserved.
Otherwise it's always been a term for someone who is extremely good lucking, successful and, yes, intelligent.
It's not a recent term either.
Chad, or more traditionally, "Chad Thundercock" dates back to 2009 at the very least and very likely to the 80s.
