Kanji may be useful as shorthand and wordplay, but Japanese could theoretically be reduced to kana. The problem is it'd look like a long mess because the language was constructed around the use of multi-syllabic kanji to shorten sentences. Without that, the only way to make sentences short and practical is to use blunt collogial Japanese at all times, which doesn't jive with their overly polite linguistic culture.
The real issue is that Japanese wasn't revised the way Hangul was (with stackable components), which is what makes it impossible to move away from Kanji without a complete reworking of kana.
