I think you could build up the kind of world you'd want in Minecraft, get people playing, and have players interact in it, but there's another question that you must answer first: who the hell wants to play an MMO that's basically like Minecraft anyway?
So I think the right question to ask is what is the best version of Minecraft that they can come up with in order to make it an MMO? And the answer is clearly, no one has managed to do it yet. So no matter what you can think of for an MMO version of Minecraft, I think it's fair to say, you can't outdo Minecraft's creators in their creation of the best possible Minecraft game ever. You can, however, do pretty good at it. You can try to use some of the lessons learned from Minecraft to make a version that's fun and entertaining, and if you can, give it a try. But you don't have to play a version of Minecraft if you don't want to, and Minecraft still looks pretty good on its own.
