All the good artists are massive numberfags, and it helps your passion to know that your work WILL be rewarded instead of hoping and praying that your work gets noticed. Many projects, amazing fanart and shit, languish and die due to a lack of exposure to a wider audience.
Like, if you know that you can put in 20+ hours into something and at the very minimum a several thousand people will notice it because it's Holothemed, that's a lot of anxiety, pressure and stress taken off your shoulders and lets you focus on putting your all into it instead of having to spend a chunk of your time trying to get people to notice your work.
I'm not saying there isn't any passion involved, but anyone who's good enough eventually has to deal with the reality that the numbers do matter.
