The closest thing to a streamer I watched and rewatched were the hour-long edited ShackTac videos, which eventually did include one woman. I can't quite say I never watched any streams, but I don't think I ever made through one from beginning to end before meeting Suisei. I did watch clips every once in a while, but they were all by men and it's not like I seriously followed anyone, although there were a couple of names I noticed kept popping up. I do also like good Let's Plays with screenshots and commentary.
I did watch some Kizuna AI back in the day, but like everyone else, got bored and forgot about it. Same thing almost happened to Hololive: I watched a shit ton of clips for a week or so, probably including a bunch of indies and Nijis too, but that was mainly because there were so many. I actually distinctly remember thinking that I'm pretty much over these vTubers and about to get on with my life, but decided to still check out the Suisei clips in my recommendeds and was a goner. I think she also happened to stream while I was watching her clips, so the livestream popped into my recommended with that bright red LIVE text, and I just clicked it and ended up watching it all the way through, which wasn't the case with anyone else insofar as I even ended up watching their stream.
I don't even know what it is about her, if you'd asked me to describe a streamer that might get my attention, I'd never have described her. Based on translate clips I do like her stuff, that's why I checked out her streams, but I'm N6 at best and honestly get filtered most of the time. But the atmosphere or her personality coming through her voice or whatever it is still sucks me in. It's not like I'm Gosling either nor am I altogether certain we could be friends IRL or anything like that, so I really don't know why her specifically. I guess it could have happened or happen again with any streamer with similar personality or charisma or whatever, this one just happened to get recommended to me and use an anime avatar.
Although now that I think about it, all the clips I watched had disembodied voice. People streaming with their real face have always put me off for some reason and I struggle to make through even a two minute clip featuring one. However, an anime avatar seems to be a fine middle ground for me personally, since I do love it when they play around with it and keep track and make reaction images of their expressions. It probably doesn't have to be an anime avatar either, although that is my preferred aesthetic, but most of the competition on that front seem to be the "DeviantArt/Tumblr" styles that I don't like, or realistic 3D which has effectively the same problems as a real face with additional uncanny valley effect.
