For this thought experiment, I’m just gonna work with my gut. I’ll start with the obvious. Gawr Gura is a Vtuber who doesn’t truly exist otherwise; contrast that with CDawgVA, a name which may refer to a VTuber but can very well refer to the non-VTuber person and/or online persona. Next example I’ll try is Mori’s roommate. To my knowledge she never had a VTubing career before Mori, but if I’m wrong, then let’s pretend anyway for the sake of argument. Roommate might say “I’m a VTuber” referring to her occupation, the way someone might say “I’m a lawyer” or “I’m a NEET.” I believe this is ontologically distinct from referring to the characters Gura or Mori as VTubers. However, they’re both valid uses of the term.
Then you start getting into more gray areas. Kson, Connor, AmaLee— all pre-existing online personas who do VTubing “on the side,” so to speak. The first line of a wiki article would probably say “So and so is a podcaster, singer, streamer, and VTuber.” All of these things can be correct even if they’re not definitionally a VTuber 24/7 like Gura is. It doesn’t always need to be a hard binary of “is/is not a VTuber.” But then again, I myself am definitely *not* a VTuber.
Coco was and is a VTuber, same way that Mori is, even in retirement. The character Coco isn’t off redefining herself with some sort of non-VTuber identity. On the other hand, if Kson had fully retired from VTubing, you might say she *was* a VTuber but *is* now something else— this is more akin to the Mori roommate occupational example.
Then there’s the obvious fact that Mori’s roommate, as a person and like any person, “is” much more than just her day job. Even if, unlike Connor or AmaLee or Kson, there is nothing else “notable” to put in a wiki line, to know her for, there is a complex person that you could apply an infinite number of labels to. Then you start getting into “fun“ philosophical questions on identity, as well.
