It makes sense since if you look at her superficially she's a strong cool offstandish female MC. You can see the appeal in that for (young) girls. Asides from that she's the first fighter female FF MC. There was Terra and Yuna but they were more magic/summon types.

Even before that Toriyama compared Lightning to a rose, plus when she summons her Eidolon Odin rose petals appear. So Lightning is heavily associated with roses.

The thing about 13 is the game has a legit fun battle system.
It just has some of the most unlikable characters imaginable, and I don't mean by just design. Their looks are fine, but holy shit are their personalities bad.

The story kicks off with Snow banging and losing your under age sister which sets lightning off to have a permanent resting bitch face and it just goes down hill from there.

The only actually likable char in that whole shit pile is Cid and his tiny chocobo buddy living in his afro.

believe me, i cringed when at the beginning with that mom shit. but snow's evasion arc for example deconstructs his false happy-go-lucky mask as him being actually stoic in the face of immense uncertainty, fear and denial. i don't know how to do spoilers so vaguely: when he finds acceptances, he literally articulates it, why he was wrong and what he know believes.
hope has 2 different character development also; at the very least, half of the main cast have good stories to tell

27 year old man whose hobby is writing, here. This probably isn't something I should admit, but outside of Pokemon, FFXIII was my first JRPG, and I loved it, and by extension, loved Lightning. I've since expanded my JRPG repertoire, and looking back on it, the criticisms the XIII series receives are very... accurate. But hey, I was probably like 15 or 16 and I'll be the first to admit I'm willingly blinded by nostalgia when I go back to it.
