At their peak, AKB was pretty much a household name in JP. You can grab random people on the street, be it school kids or 60-70 years old elderly, and chances are that they would at least know about AKB, if not having their own favorite. It wasn't that rare to see some wota speaking into loudspeakers near Sousenkyo asking for people to buy CDs and vote for their oshi. Their top 10, especially Kami-7 were pretty much celebrities while making shit tons of money. There were a peroid where a bunch of living community and various companies (both large and small) filmed themselves dancing to AKB's KFC song. As much as HoloJP's popularity has been growing, they aren't really at that stage yet.
It's true that Hololive is a better place to work for than AKB, though. AKB is extremely top heavy, so either you belong to top 10-20, or you will be literal who outside of your prefecture. Out of top 40-ish and it's unclear whether you'd make enough money to live independently. At least most of HololiveJP earn enough money to live comfortably I guess
