They probably got tens of thousands of application minimum.
Each application needed to have an accompanying 5 minute video which has to be watched by someone
plus the actual application after that was also pretty lengthy and without character limits which also has to be read by someone
On top of all that they then have take all the ones that were liked by the staff and deliberate over which ones didn't make the cut, which ones would represent Nijisanji well, which ones might be entertaining, etc.
and that's all before even the first interview.
Plus covid isn't helping expedite the process either
