Most of EN seems to have had it rough.

If I recall what she said correctly, it was more that there was rarely anyone at her house and there never was much food stocked, it's not necessarily that her family was too poor to afford food (even if it does sound like she was poor for japanese standards), it's probably more due to bad parenting, if the stories of her mother being apathetic towards her are true.
