I'm in the US but it's not an extreme accent, I just pronounce R and V softer than a standard American accent and some of my vowels are slightly accented, particularly my Os and I have kind of a cockney way of pronouncing words like "little" I tend to go "li'le" sometimes
Basically what I'm trying to tell you, don't explicitly watch Japanese shows, Japanese streamers, Japanese youtubers and listen to Japanese music for years on end. I got off lucky though, most people usually just think I sound slightly English or German.

Happens naturally since accents are learned from the start; if you spend time around people who speak a different language or have accents different than the one you normally have, you'll probably pick up their inflections
I think that's why Kiara is starting to speak with more of a 'German' accent (such as words like "think" she's begun saying "fink") since she's been back in Austria for a while

No, but I picked up on some Japanese speech patterns because I was obsessed with a singer called Gackt during my teens and he was my idol...he was also EVERYWHERE in Japanese media, so I spent a lot of time watching anything and everything he was involved in, even if I didn't understand it. So I'd watch lots of tv interviews, listen to the 'drama CDs' that came with his albums, any kind of thing I could. And I would re-watch and re-listen to everything as well. Then I also would just watch bits of daytime TV or talk shows on Youtube. I listened exclusively to Japanese music and often would follow them too but not to the same extent. I watched some Japanese movies too but those weren't as accessible at the time and studied Japanese language taught by native speakers so that I could understand my interests better.
Because my mom is an Anglophile, I only heard British tv or music outside of the things I chose to listen to. So the only natural American accents I heard for a few years were from my parents and my girlfriend at the time.

Hm I just wasn't that interested. Since I was so into Japanese things, I didn't have many people I could relate to outside of the weebs at school but they were the "oMfG wAfFleZ i ShiP sAsUkE aNd KaKaShi xDD sOoO KaWa-EE aM i RiGhT *glompraepz yhuu*" type, so I didn't like them. Whenever I went out it was just with my girlfriend, and we'd be very in our own world. It's still like that a lot of the time I think, which is why it's stuck so far.

As an English native, I learned Mandarin (poorly), then Japanese (decently), then German (recently, improving). My German friends tell me that my Japanese accent is very confusing to them. I do not know how to fix it.

Can you understand a heavy accent in your own language? Most people say yes.
The only difference is when it has diverged so much it is considered its own language. See English and Scots. The 2 share a lot of similarity, but there's some heavy differences from common local use that you'd struggle with some common concepts.
Of course, there's also the full-retard types that can barely understand their own local accents, never mind others.

Regarding Sana:
One thing I noticed is that you can hear her Aussie accent when she says words like "Liver".

If JP peeps pronounce it as a "LAIVAA" or "RAIVAA", then you can her that Aussie sound when she says it.

Interestingly, for other Anzac vtubers, there are cases where ancestry still takes hold.

For instance, in the case of Ban Hada (the Korean-Aussie pirate from Nijisanji KR), I still hear a lot of Korean pronunciations in her Japanese speaking.

But interestingly, she does not seem to be so much affected by the 'tsu' sound (e.g. itsutsu).
