I mean they could just not have celebrated it at all but apparently they want to and thought of some reason to make it a thing. Could also easily be a mistranslation of "it's a holiday where you spend time with loved ones" over to "it's a holiday where you spend time with lovers" on the part of whoever introduced it to them.
