The statement means precisely what it appears to mean. It was said to the Apostles right after a man gave up on following Jesus because he refused to give up his wealth, and preceded by the statement: "Amen, I say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." There is no reason in the context of the text, nor in the rest of Jesus' teachings, nor in any exterior historical account to deny the obvious reading and fabricate this gate for which there is no evidence. Except, of course, the wishful thinking of greedy rich people.
