You might thing they're suckers for doing it, but it's why Japan has been able to generate so much niche culture compared to the rest of the world.
The US tipping culture and the Japanese culture of paying a lot of shit you like might seem like a suckers behavior on an individual level, but it has created niches and hobbies and many forms of entertainment that are top tier. And no, the European is not a Machiavellian mastermind that enjoys things for free. He's a second-class viewer that needs to accommodate himself to US/JP taste, otherwise there aren't even scraps left for him.
All of that being said, there are good EU indies.
