Feels like Nijisanji makes much less effort to include the foreign branches than Hololive does. I guess with 150 streamers or whatever it's hard to include everyone but I feel like it would increase interest in the west in their Japanese streamers.

Riichi mahjong isn't played outside of Japan by non-Japanese. The Hong Kong variant, for example, is very different - mainly, there are no point totals, discards can't easily be read because they go into a pile in the middle of the table, no furiten rule, no riichi (obviously), heavily dependent on seizing tiles instead of closed hands, and a significantly smaller subset of valid hands. It's practically a different game.

There are more rules involving the discard tiles and they also tell a lot about what type of hand people are forming. People think bluffing is more skill than reading an ordained amount of partially open info when humans are notoriously bad at detecting lies and you're pretty much coinflipping when doing that.

The tournament was (deliberately) structured to promote the luck and entertainment factor, with big losses and big wins. It's not reflective of high-level play
