Let me start with a disclaimer that I personally don't follow Holos for GFE and I really don't like rabid Unicorn fuckers. My oshi actually makes it a point to shoot down gachikois and doesn't even read SCs usually. But I do understand the appeal. Certain Holos, Rushia being the biggest example, do things that have been defined as Girlfriend Experience or GFE. This includes but is not limited to, reading every individual superchat, interacting with the chat, asking them about their day, asking for their opinions on things, sharing things from their life, doing certain kinds of ASMR, acting sad or vulnerable, and just generally leaning hard into the parasocial aspect of Vtubing.
Now when they do this, they are knowingly appealing to the lonely single male crowd, and for good reason, that's a large demographic in Japan and in the world in general. So thus these men feel compelled to donate and member, and otherwise support them FOR THIS REASON. And yes it's an illusion but it's a nice illusion, just like how they aren't really an anime character but they look like one. The GFE Holos are selling you something nice, an experience, much like a roller coaster ride or movie or a play.
And yet, every time something happens to break this illusion, all these normalfags swarm out of the woodwork like insects, saying things like YOU DON'T OWN HER and SHE CAN DO WHAT SHE WANTS, and my favorite, NONE OF IT IS REAL.
Fuck off. You are missing the point. When I go to see a movie I know it's not real. But I don't want the actors to break character and point out how fake everything is, unless it's part of some meta commentary and the movie is breaking the 4th wall on purpose. When I play a game, I know it's not real, but I do want pretty textures and graphics, not just wireframes and polygonal models. Tons of people watch and enjoy wrestling even though they know it's fake, they just don't want some fucking asshole going WELL ACTUALLY IT'S ALL SCRIPTED every 5 minutes. They're trying to enjoy it.
The GFE Holos are selling feelings, there's an unwritten contract between them and their audience. When they do something to break that contract, that part of their audience is free to stop supporting them. You don't deserve money or love unconditionally, you are providing a service and if you stop providing that service, it shouldn't be a surprise if the money stops coming in. Again I don't personally follow Holos for the GFE. And it's definitely not okay for fans who feel they've been spited to go schizo and turn into Antis. But all these bewildered normalfags saying that GFE is creepy or that the Holo never did anything wrong are so far out of their depth when it comes to this particular hobby.
