I've lived my entire life in the northeast US, never heard anyone use "coon" to refer to anything but a washbear, and then in the early 00s I saw it go on an MMO's censor list for apparently being related to >le ebin N word lololol, and the irony being that the game in question had a character class labelled "raccoon" and everybody in the game was fair-skinned, so people were saying it all the time with a very, very obvious meaning anyway.
