Reinforcement aka Motivation is divided into Extrinsic and Intrinsic. Extrinsic Motivation is giving yourself chocolate every time you learn a piece of kana or Kanji. Unfortunately, it does not work forever. You must constantly reinforce yourself with rewards if you want to memorize you have learned in your long term memory.
Intrinsic Motivation on the other hand comes from oneself (I know, Existentialism bullshit, but that's what they teach in psych classes) It's like an innate drive, an overpowering Id like Freud described. For example, "I want to learn Nihongo so I can say to my Oshi how much Aishiteru" As long as you have that Innate drive, then you don't need chocolates to serve as your reward. You are your own reinforcement.
