It containts the artist's experience whether it's their struggle, mindset, emotion, romance, familly, environment, etc. What people usually refered to soul is that their music/lyrics are honest to their struggle and the weight balance the lyric it convey. It's all related to the street and street knowledge, hence why you can find many slangs used in the rap music unique to their own origin. That's why it's hard to take the white people's rap seriously when they speak of struggle since most of it doesnt connect with the "lower class" that seeing it as just some "whine". Eminem worked cause he came from such background of poverty and struggle. So any kind of struggle themed rap songs that came from those who have privilage of choice are seeing as lacking soul.
