You'd get your first portable console with Pokemon for your birthday or Christmas and play the shit of it and it'll force itself into a special place
So despite the game hardly innovating at all after all these years, people will still buy it no matter what because of nostalgia and fond memories. Arceus is a few steps towards innovation, but Gamefreak just doesn't have the expertise to make a strong open world. That's still forgiven though because they didn't fail in retaining the feel of the franchise.
So if you're just getting into it now, you'll probably see it as a pretty low tier JRPG, and I wouldn't recommend trying to get into it unless you're extra curious. But Pokemon probably isn't going to die for a long time. A lot of the first generation Pokemon players are starting to become parents and are passing down the craze to their kids keeping the cycle going.
