Most of the "soundproofing" foam and other garbage you buy is sound dampening, which does nothing to stop sound from transmitting through the building, its purpose is to reduce reflections in the room you install it to create a better recording environment.
If your building wasn't designed to be soundproof, there is very little you can do, especially as a renter. Ideally you want an air gap between your room and the rest of the building but it's not like you can conjure one out of midair.
You can do things like keep your windows closed, hang thick curtains in front of the windows, and, yeah, block off the door edges. That's effective. Trying to mount foam to the walls isn't going to do anything.
Also, "sound proof" isn't even what you want when you're recording. Sound proofing materials try to contain sound within the room (obviously) which is not what you want when recording: you really want absorption.
