In the early days of YouTube, the idea was that people would be uploading video blogs. Hence the name "YouTube". Later on came
justin.tv with an emphasis on livestreaming. The modern vtuber follows in this tradition.
YouTube was launched in 2005. Back then most online video content that wasn't porn was the sort of dumb meme videos that dominate YouTube today. But those videos weren't on YouTube. They were on sites like Big-Boys or ebaumsworld.
It was only later that this sort of content started to make its way onto YouTube, giving rise to genres such as YouTube poop. Hell, Annoying Orange didn't even hit the scene until 2009. By then YouTube was already mainstream.
