Think about how many people get super serious about the sportsball team that happened to exist in the state they grew up in. They have nothing to do with that team, they have no say in how it operates, yet they still consider it a part of them.
Humans have a primal need for the thing that they like or are a part of, whether that be state, race, profession, hobby, or interest, to be proven to be "better" or more "worthy" than other things, especially in the same categories. Even if it's pointless, even if they have no power to actually affect it. Regardless we'll engage in tribalism because we're hard-wired to do so, because we want to believe that somehow the group we belong to or worship is better than the equivalent in the "others" camp.
