>>19824096 A black man named Bigger Thomas takes a job with a wealthy white capitalist and his blind wife to provide for his family (who live in a rat-infested apartment). Bigger is tasked with driving around the capitalist’s communist-sympathizing daughter and her boyfriend. The pair get drunk; after Bigger drops the boyfriend off at home, he carries the daughter to her room, and can’t resist sneaking a kiss. While standing over her bed, the capitalist’s blind wife bursts into the room. To keep from being discovered Bigger smothers the daughter with a pillow. After the capitalist’s wife leaves, Bigger removes the pillow and discovers the capitalist’s daughter has died. He panics, and rushes downstairs to the furance. He decapitates the corpse so it will fit into the opening, and burns the body.
