The whole reason why people hated the idea of gifted memberships is because it brings people who otherwise would never think of buying one into the same group as normal members. Many vtubers act differently with their members and are often more open in their posts and streams. If a bunch of random lurkers or trolling greys start getting regular access to those streams and posts then it could easily mean they start being more reserved and that ruins part of the enjoyment.
At least this way they get "something" and at the same time the vtuber gets the money. If they really want to get access to membership stuff then they would pay for it themselves. If they can't afford one, that's a shame, but unfortunately that's the way the world works.
