Vtubing as a business revolves around monetizing parasocial relationships. They biggest revenue isn't from the (relatively) well adjusted people who only tunes in every now and then and maybe watches a few ad breaks. Their biggest revenue is from the people throwing down money right and left on everything from donations to subs to superchats to merchandise. Which is to say it's for people who are so socially unhealthy that a pay to play parasocial relationship with an anime girl on screen is going to suck them in. Like anyone sucked into a habit they're probably spending money that they can't afford to spend trying to get the attention of anime girls.
