it's also meant to be an exercise in humility, the idea is that you will learn to appreciate basic sustenance much more if you know what it's like to not have it. essentially it lets you experience what being someone who has nothing is like, and you will be more thankful for what you do have, which ultimately comes from Allah.
finally, the morning feast (suhoor) and evening feast (iftar) are typically communal events, usually done at minimum with the members of your family or with other members of your mosque/masjid. bonds between people are strengthened both by common experiences and by mutual hardship. the daily fast offers both, and you will be drawn more closely into your Muslim community as a result
