I think describing a parasocial relationship as purely negative is wrong. We're talking about the relationship between an entertainer and their audience. As we have seen and as the existence of this board demonstrates, the mutual appreciation between entertainer and audience inspires and encourages both parties.
The problem starts when either side assumes more. We cringe at emotional superchats but to those fans the entertainer is someone they feel they can share those personal moments with. It happens the other way too, when the entertainer shares too much. When money gets involved, as it always does, the complex feelings around debt, patronage and ownership create expectations that go well beyond common sense. Even liking an entertainer subscribes one to a community of fans, with all the politics such a gathering creates both within itself and groups of other entertainers' fans.
