Truckers have to move across large distances in a small amount of time, so fast food places and gas stations will set up shop at literally any and every highway exit, even out in the boonies. From there, other businesses move in to expand, because it's guaranteed to be high traffic and the land is usually not too expensive if it's not already developed.
The result is that image: an image that could have been taken pretty much anywhere in America.
