If I'd take a guess, it'd be like makeup. Everyone can have it but if you want to make full use of its potential, you either need to pay a professional or have someone close with a very good understanding how to make it look well. And that's not even touching upon the issue that if it would be an equal opportunity markets (everyone being able to get a beautiful avatar), some avatars will be considered extremely beautiful and most others will strive to be like that but lose out due to lack of originality / first mover advantage / plain bad luck. Just another fashion trend, but one I would welcome nonetheless.
