What would happen if one of these girls suddenly died? How are the rest supposed to mourn? Pretending like they’re still a fictional character at that point and saying stuff like “RIP Houshou Marine” would be in bad taste.

I've wondered this myself. But they are not necessarily fictional characters. Obviously the backstories and all that are fiction, but the names have become synonymous with the streamers themselves. Most of them stream as themselves with the anonymity of an avatar, so it wouldn't be wrong to refer to them by their vtuber name in a situation like that.

I don't think we can classify them as a fictional character since it's basically someone with a mask. I believe if such morbid thing happened in Hololive, they would address it and have a mourning period to respect the dead. I'm not sure how it would be if it happens in another agency though.
